Detroit, 2008. Ha visto morire Francis Turner, il patriarca, che nel 1945 era emigrato a Detroit dall’Arkansas per diventare predicatore. È sullo sfondo di una Detroit mutevole e contraddittoria, tra lotte dei neri e fughe dei bianchi, che i flashback del passato si intrecciano alle vicende del presente. Le vite di Francis e Viola ventenni, negli anni Quaranta, uno al Nord e l’altra al Sud, si alternano con le storie dei loro figli: Cha-Cha, in terapia da una psicologa per affrontare il problema dello spettro e del peso delle sue responsabilità famigliari; Lelah, incapace di tutelare ciò che ama per via della dipendenza dal gioco d’azzardo; Troy, rancoroso e insoddisfatto, che cerca di salvare la casa con sotterfugi illegali; e gli altri, la salutista Francey, il trasandato Lonnie, gli scanzonati Miles e Duke… Per prendere una decisione devono fare i conti con il passato, il presente e il valore dei vincoli di sangue. Quanto sono disposti a pagare per proteggere le loro origini? Angela Flournoy ci regala un romanzo pieno di sfaccettature e di voci, a tratti ironico e colorito, a tratti profondo e riflessivo, in cui gli spettri non sono solo presenze soprannaturali ma simboleggiano anche debolezze, dubbi e desideri. La casa di Yarrow Street e la città di Detroit diventano anch’esse personaggi, testimoni di cambiamenti storici e di legami fatti di amore e orgoglio, rivalità e segreti, perdono e speranze di felicità.

Angela Flournoy è nata nel 1985 ed è cresciuta a West Covina, nella California del Sud. Si è laureata presso la University of Southern California. Ha insegnato alla University of Iowa, alla New School, alla Columbia University, alla Princeton University e alla ucla (Università della California a Los Angeles). È stata ricercatrice con borsa alla Rona Jaffe Foundation presso il New York Public Library’s Dorothy and Lewis B. Cullman Center for Scholars and Writers. Nel 2018 ha ottenuto una borsa di ricerca dal National Endowment for the Arts. Alcuni dei suoi scritti sono apparsi su «The New Yorker», «The Paris Review», «The New York Times», «Los Angeles Times» e «The Nation». La casa dei Turner è il suo romanzo d’esordio con il quale ha vinto il VCU Cabell First Novelist Award ed è stato finalista al National Book Award, al Center for Fiction First Novel Prize, al Barnes & Noble Discover Great New Writers, all’Indie Next Pick e al «New York Times» Notable Book of the Year.
